At
heart, saxaphonist Ed Calle is an unapologetic
romantic. "When I wrote the music for
"Twilight", his latest Concord Records
release, "I was thinking about driving in Miami
at 6:30 in the evening, when it's rainy out."
The CD "has more sensuality about it than the
other albums I've done. I tried to calm down a
little. It's a very pretty album. It's a romantic
record. It's about creating atmosphere." |

Creating the proper atmosphere is something that sax whiz
Calle, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, knows more about
perhaps than any other working instrumentalist in the
world today. He has been called upon literally thousands
of times to provide just the right touch to solos and
ensemble, including playing on hundreds of albums that represent just
about every style of music, Latin and jazz. In the
past year, when Latin pop artists hit the mainstream with
the force of a tropical gale, the affable sax man was in
the midst of the action, contributing arrangements or
performing on albums by such mega stars as Ricky Martin,
Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Christina Aguilera.
Such high profiles were not unexpected, given the
stellar reputation he'd built during a long tenure as a key contributor to albums
by Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, Julio
Iglesias, Jon Secada, Frank Sinatra, Arturo Sandoval and a
legion of other Latin and non-Latin vocal and instrumental
stars.
Always warmly welcomed to Southwest Florida by an
enormously loyal fan base -- largely built upon airplay of
Ed's music on Smooth Jazz WDRR 98.5 FM, and his energetic
and joyful performances at area venues -- Ed will be an
incredible opener to what will be the best Jazz on the
Green event ever presented. He is "honored" to
be invited to participate in our event and, as a father,
strongly supports the idea of a charity jazz festival to
benefit The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.
Besides the romantic grooves from
"Twilight", you can expect a liberal serving of
Latin music during Ed's performance at Jazz on the Green,
including popular cuts from his previous release,
"Sunset Harbor" and others. Jazz on the Green is
thrilled to welcome Ed Calle back to Southwest Florida, a
place he fondly calls "his second home."
