"I may be considered by many to be
a jazz or Latin jazz flutist," he says today from
his Coral Gables, Florida home. "But in New York, I
began to develop my improvisational skills as a
charanga flutist. That’s how I cut my teeth. The
melodic and rhythmic approach to my playing comes
from playing that kind of Cuban dance music 20 years
ago."
Smooth Jazz with soul. |

Over the past
decade, flutist Nestor Torres has all but defined a new
genre of popular music, a style where the spicy rhythms of
his Caribbean homeland meld with tantalizingly romantic
melodies to create some of the smoothest, most listenable
- and danceable - sounds in contemporary instrumental
music. Most of his fans already consider this infectious
hybrid of exotic rhythms and catchy themes to be a
veritable music paradise. He tantalized smooth jazz and
Latin music lovers with his Latin Grammy-nominated song
"Luna Latina" from his Shanachie debut Treasures of the
Heart. Now, with the release of his second Shanachie
album, This Side of Paradise, Nestor invites listeners to
delight in yet another dimension of his talent as he
revisits some of the Caribbean’s most hallowed rhythmic
traditions. He reshapes these timeless styles into fresh,
dynamic, and uncommonly appealing performances that attest
both to his total command of the flute and the challenging
music terrain he’s chosen to explore.

home. "But in New York, I began to develop my
improvisational skills as a charanga flutist. That’s how I
cut my teeth. The melodic and rhythmic approach to my

entrancing, swaying feel of the vintage style takes on a
new personality in Nestor’s capable hands, bringing his
fans yet another rhythmic delicacy to savor.
After a propitious career that has included high profile
associations with such Latin music luminaries as Marc
Anthony, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Cuban bassist Cachao,
and Gloria Estefan, Nestor Torres is in full command of
the whole range of Latin, popular, jazz and classical
genres. That’s why, with supreme confidence, he sums up
This Side of Paradise as truly the best of all worlds.
Those who come under its spell will quickly agree.
